Men’s Sober Living

After completing treatment, it is time to go out and start enjoying your new, sober life. However, not everyone has somewhere to go once they leave a treatment center or rehab facility. As a result of their addiction, some people might find themselves essentially homeless. Others might have somewhere to go but for whatever reason don’t feel safe or comfortable returning there. For men who need somewhere to call home while they transition into their new, sober life, there is the option of men’s sober living homes.

What Is A Men’s Sober Living Home?

A sober living home is a house or a group of homes that exist for the sole purpose of providing housing to those who have recently completed drug and alcohol treatment and require a place to stay. A men’s sober living facility is no different, except it is not coed, and just men live together who are on the path of remaining abstinent from drugs and alcohol, and have the goal of long-term sobriety. Learning how to live a sober life can be a difficult and stressful thing and not everyone has a support system at home to help with that transition process.

For those that either have nowhere to go after completing treatment or don’t feel comfortable returning home, a sober living home can be a great place to go as you re-acclimate yourself into society while also learning how to go about your life newly sober.

What Can I Expect in a Men’s Sober Living Home?

Living at a sober living facility is a lot like living in a private home. While living at a men’s sober living facility you can come and go as you please and are expected to have a job and pay for your incidentals, just like you would if you were living on your own. While restrictions are minimal, there are still some rules that are expected to be followed while being at a sober living home, such as possible curfews, restrictions and what is and isn’t allowed on the property, and even random drug and alcohol screening.

One of the biggest benefits of a men’s sober living home is the support system that comes with it. Many sober living facilities offer 12-step programs for their residents and in some cases attendance is even required. 12-step programs are used to create structure, accountability, and sober fellowship. A big part of staying in a sober living home is creating positive friendships that help to reinforce the desire to abstain from drugs and alcohol.

Are Sober Living Homes Gender-Specific?

While most common areas are open to both men and women to come together and mingle, most sober living facilities offer gender-specific housing.

Being newly sober can be a confusing time on its own, without other outside factors being brought in like the prospect of romance or secular exploration. The purpose of a sober living home is to focus on your sobriety as well as reacclimating back into society. Having men and women mixed can complicate that goal.

A major benefit of men’s sober living is the ability to truly express yourself and share your feelings in a safe environment. Many men are afraid to truly open up, especially around women. Taking women out of the equation allows for a safe space for men to share their feelings and help each other with the acclimation process back into society.

How Do I Find A Sober Living Home?

When choosing a sober living home, many things can factor in. For starters, you have to decide where you want to live. While many people choose to stay local when undergoing treatment, some people choose to undergo their treatment outside their local area. If you are someone who underwent addiction treatment outside your local community, you will need to decide if you want to enter a sober living facility in the same area that you completed treatment or if you want to return to your home community.

After choosing where you want to live, you will then want to pick a facility that best meets your needs. Maybe you are interested in certain amenities, or maybe you want to live near certain things, like shopping or the beach. While stays in sober living homes tend to last 90 days, in some situations they can last longer so it might be important for someone to live close to certain places for work or other reasons.

If you are unsure when it comes to picking the right sober living home, your treatment center might be able to give you a recommendation, or they might even have certain sober living facilities that they partner with. Additionally, you can always call up sober living homes with any questions you may have in regards to rules, amenities, or any other questions or concerns that you may have.
